MY QUEST TO SEE THE 1000 GREATEST FILMS
CURRENT TALLY = 492 SEEN / 508 TO GO

In case you were wondering, the 1,000 Greatest Films I speak of are those over at the wonderful filmsite They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?, where a compiled list of greatest films (gleaned from over 1,300 different critic's and filmmaker's lists) has been put together. My quest is to see all of the films on this list.

Although I thought myself rather well-versed (so to speak) in the world of cinema, when I decided to take this quest upon myself, I had only seen 444 of these films. That means 556 to go. Many of these films are classics of cinema which, for some inexplicable reason, I have not yet seen, but many are films from the obscurest reaches of world cinema, so it should be a challange indeed - and one I whole-heartedly leap into. As for an extra challange, Kevin Lee is doing the same damn thing over at Shooting Down Pictures, and he is already waaaaay ahead of me. He is currently at #913 (this number will be updated as Mr. Lee completes his quest).

So wish me luck and periodically check back to see how I am doing. You can scroll down the page (most recent additions are listed at the top) to see how I am progressing throughout the next year or two. I wonder if I can actually pull it off in under two years!? I don't want to rush myself, so we will see. As for any sort of critique of these films, it probably won't happen. With reviewing current cinema on a regular basis, the time will probably not present itself for any true critical analysis, though many of these films will be given ample space once I post my Greatest Films List (which should be published sometime in late 2008) elsewhere on this site. Until then, this is mainly just a list for the purpose of showing off how many films I have seen. I say that rather tongue-in-cheek, but basically I suppose it is true. Anyway, thanx for listening.

Oh yeah, one last thing. In a desire to multi-task, I went and found out how many films I had already seen on Jonathan Rosenbaum's 1000 Essential Films List (which can be viewed here), and lo and behold, I am even worse off there, having seen just a meager 279 of his choices. Perhaps that is another project for another day, but instead of waiting (and with quite the crossover) I have undertaken this quest as well. All the bells and whistles can be seen over at the aptly named Rosenbaum Project.

********************* !!! ATTENTION !!! ATTENTION !!! *********************

The wonderful folks over at They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? have updated their 1,000 Greatest Films List and in doing so, a bit of adjustment needs to take place here in my countdown. You see, 139 new films have been added to the list, and (of course) 139 films have been dropped from the list as well. Unfortunately for yours truly, just as a finally reached #500 (after a long drought I was feeling a bit like Alex Rodriguez just before he hit that ball over the left field wall) I have to go back and do it all over again. Okay, maybe not all of it, but since more films I had seen dropped off the list than were added, I find myself back down at #477. Arrrggghhhh!!!!! Oh well, this just means more films to watch and that is never a problem. The only film added to the list that I have first seen after taking on this project is The Chronicles of Anna Magdelena Bach, otherwise all the additions I have seen were prior to January 1, 2007. With that being said, the countdown will resume above with number 478. Meanwhile below, the adjusted numbers are listed in red (those no longer on the 1,000 Greatest List are unumbered).
